A new Alex Katz retrospective will take place in Europe in the summer of 2020 at the Museo nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid.

Also, in 2021, Voorlinden presents the first solo exhibition of the legendary American painter Alex Katz (b. 1927) in the Netherlands. His career was born in the 1950s and 1960s - at the height of Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art - and for decades Katz has been striving to transcend his contemporaries with his timeless paintings, which cannot be captured in any genre. His highly recognizable signature is characterized by large-format canvases that look like billboards on which he applies paint with limited visual means and color fields.

Katz is interested in capturing fleeting moments, fragments from a film or a poem, so to speak. His most important muse is his wife Ada, whom he has captured in over 200 paintings in a magnificent yet intimate manner. The exhibition in Voorlinden consists of an ahistorical selection of earlier and more recent works, including the dynamic Homage to Degas 14 from 2018, and the museum looks forward to introducing the Dutch public to this master painter who is unique in his pictorial language. Voorlinden is one of the few Dutch museums that collects works by Katz.

Painter, sculptor and graphic artist, Katz became famous for his figurative paintings. His works are immediately recognizable by their colorful, two-dimensional style, which was created as a reaction to the Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s. Although Katz is widely recognized for his role as a precursor of the Pop Art movement, he has avoided being associated with any style or movement throughout his career.

Galerie Frank Fluegel has had the artist Alex Katz in its program from the very beginning and has also pointed out for years that he was long completely underestimated in Europe. Now that he is over 90 years old, his work is increasingly coming into focus.

Four major exhibitions have been dedicated to his talent in recent years. Among other European media, the FAZ / supplement Madame, the British "Telegraph" and the "Interview" Magazine in Paris contained interviews with him.

Like Picasso, Katz develops more and more creativity as he grows older and seems unstoppable in the creation of new works.

A new world record for a painting by Katz was set at the Phillips auction house in London on Wednesday, October 2, 2019. The painting Blue Umbrella I from 1972 fetched £3,375,000 or the equivalent of 4.1 million US dollars.

This far exceeded the upper estimate of 1.2 million and tripled the previous record price at an auction for the artist, which is still far from the prices of his American colleagues such as Tom Wesselmann or Andy Warhol.

Many Alex Katz exhibitions have been dedicated to his talent in recent years. Among others, this includes the Serpentine Gallery in London, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and in 2019 in Munich/Germany at Museum Brandhorst; Daegu/Korea Daegu Kunstmuseum, Paris/France Musée de L'Orangerie. Coming up this year, there is the new Alex Katz exhibition at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, Spain.

The Guggenheim Museum in New York will show an Alex Katz retrospective in 2022.
